Friends and Volunteers Appreciation Potluck Dinner

Each year, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources staff honors volunteers who donate their services to Volo Bog State Natural Area, Moraine Hills State Park and McHenry Dam. Friends members and site volunteers gather to share a meal, swap stories and celebrate another year’s accomplishments. This event is open to paid members and active volunteers.  Membership is not required to volunteer and volunteering is not required to be a member. Interested? Click on the "Join/Donate" button for more information.

In 2018, volunteers contributed almost 5,000 hours to these Illinois Department of Natural Resources sites! Special Recognition was given to Dave Albright and Susan Hahl as Volunteers of the Year at and Moraine Hills State Park and Volo Bog State Natural Area, respectively.

We will honor the volunteers of 2019 at the potluck dinner on January 9, 2020.

Dave Albright of Crystal Lake was awarded the 2018 Volunteer of the Year for Moraine Hills State Park and McHenry Dam. Dave began volunteering in 2007. His tasks include tending the native gardens near the park's nature center, co-stewarding Osprey Meadows as part of the site's Habitat Retoration and Stewardship Team, Roving Naturalist, and assisting with special events such as World Migratory Bird Day, and Family Fishing Day at McHenry Dam. He is a vital member of the Moraine Hills Run for the Hills steering committee and co-chairs the Friends of Moraine Hills State Park's Grant Committee. Dave joined the Friends of Moraine Hills State Park board of directors in2009 and serves as the organization's treasurer. This is Mr. Albright's second time to be awarded Volunteer of the Year by Moraine Hills State Park. The first time was in 2011. Congratulations, Dave, and thanks for all your hard work!

Susan Hahl of Ingleside was named 2018 Volunteer of the Year for Volo Bog State Natural Area. Susan began volunteering at Volo Bog in 2017 and has been a tireless contributor from the start. She serves primarily as a Friday Docent and Interpretive Office Support. Her interest and talent as an artist have her continually finding ways to contribute to the site's special events and projects. She expanded a bird art project for World Migratory Bird Days, created a collaborative mural for participants to contribute to in celebration of International Bog Day, and is painting bag-toss game boards with various habitats for Friends of Volo Bog and Friends and Moraine Hills State Park. Just recently, the site added "Artist in Resident" to her volunteer title. Congratulations, Susan, and thank you for your time, effort and talent!
