2007 is the first year for the Moraine Hills Native Plant Gardeners.  Bob Vetter, Prairie Garden Coordinator for Volo Bog State Natural Area, was asked to divide his time with Moraine Hills State Park and work with Stacy Iwanicki, the Volunteer Coordinator and Naturalist for both sites.  Stacy recruited six new gardeners, two of which have also become Docents, and members of the Board of Directors for the Friends of Moraine Hills State Park. Ann Shanks, an experienced Volo Bog Prairie Gardener, transferred over to help the new gardeners.

We lost three gardeners at the end of 2007 (Diane Brown, Jim McNames, Joe Radcliffe) and we replaced them with Jim Cwerenz , Richard Carlson, Rebecca Tippens, Gary Seiler, & Shereen Hammad, but we still need a few more volunteer native plant gardeners to take care of our existing plots and hopefully expand, such as the new plot near the McHenry Dam.. The best way to learn about our native plants is to work with them, and you will be provided with your own handbook and whatever guidance you may need.

2009 has given us the following three new gardeners Dave Albright, Karen Bastek, & Joan Proell, but we lost two Jim Cwerenz & Sherri Stahl.

Native Garden Burn

In 2010 the NGVs did their first garden burn. The staff still did the garden burns at the Visitors Center plots, but because of staff shortages, the NGVs volunteered help in doing the other garden burns.  On April 2nd Stacy led gardeners, Joan Proell, David Albright, Ann Shanks, Lyn Kurz, Myna Nelson & her Grandson, Gerard, plus Garden coordinator, Bob Vetter in a burn at the Turn-around plot. We then went over to the Main Park entrance to burn, when  PGV, Nancy Bodinet joined us. While two of the entrance plots were being burned, Dave, Nancy & Bob were soon joined by Gary Seiler to work on the Cattail Point plot. When Stacy and some of the gardeners had to leave, Assistant Superintendent , John Laskowski arrived to supervised Myrna, Gary & Bob in burning Cattail Point and the South East Entrance plot.
