The
Friends of
History
Our first meeting took place At Neil Whitman’s home on July 31, 2007. We elected Neil Whitman to be our Chairperson, David Peterson – Vice Chairperson, Bob Vetter- Treasurer & Membership Chairperson, Myrna Nelson – Recording & Corresponding Secretary, and Directors Angie Peterson & Sandra Wells. Also present at the meeting were advisers Moraine Hills State Park staff member Stacy Iwanicki and her husband Mike.
After introductions, we agreed to use the Friends of Volo Bog by-laws as a model for our own. We then discussed purpose and benefits for forming the organization. Mike Iwanicki, having had experience in the paperwork needed to file with the State and federal government, advised us on what we had to look forward to. David Peterson volunteered his services to take care of the paperwork necessary, so Mike gave him some of the forms, etc that he would need to file. We had our election, after which we discussed recruiting and using the Friends of Volo Bog application form as a model for our own. We agreed that we would try to meet on the fourth Monday of each month.
Two new members, Bill & Bonnie Sheehan, joined us at our August 27th meeting, but did not want to be directors. We received a $100.00 donation from the Friends of Volo Bog, filled out applications designed by Neil, and agreed on the TCF Bank for our account.
We added a new director, Paul Howerton, at our September 24th meeting, as well as a chairperson, Richard Niemann, for our future fishing program. At our October 29th meeting the Board approved that Bob Vetter set up a Website for our organization.
In 2008 we lost the Petersons to health problems, but gained Mike Iwanicki, who took over the paperwork of filing our organization with the State and Federal Government. Our membership count at that time was 18. At our September 09, 2009 meeting Sharon Lane joined and became a Director. The following year at our February 10, 2010 David Albright was added to our Board of Directors, and soon after became the Treasurer & Membership Chairman at the request of Bob Vetter, who had his hands full as Webmaster. At that same meeting we learned that we were approved as a 501c3 organization. Another high point of 2010 was our “Run for the Hills” 10K & Half Marathon, which took place Saturday, October 23rd
