The Friends of Moraine Hills State Park

Family Fishing Day (June 8, 2008)

The newly formed  friends of Moraine State Park offered a family fishing day at the McHenry Dam to teach children how to fish, but an early windy rain storm put a damper on the event.  The storms threatened to blow us away but instead they cleared in time for a nice barbeque!  Thanks to Dick Niemann for the Dogs & Buns, Paul & Judith Howerton for the burgers & potato chips (and Barbee-grill).  Along with Bob’s onions & Stacy’s sodas and tortillas - we sure didn’t go hungry.  Neil Whitman brought the worms...

After a little baiting & casting practice, the girls (Stacy & Meagan) sent the guys down to view the Fishing Video with Bob.  While they were away, a family arrived, staying with us for almost an hour.  The little girl, Rachel who was about six years old quickly became proficient at casting.  Her little fingers weren’t quite strong enough to hold down the reel button at first but soon she mastered the technique.  Little brother Tommy will be ready next year. Stacy gave them some sodas, a program brochure, FOMHSP literature and oodles of fishing handouts to take home.  Then the guys wandered back in time for a little more chips, soda and comradery.  At 3:30 we packed it in for the day.

Skies are starting to clear, so volunteers & visitors can eat.
